What’s Goal-Based Investing, Anyway?

April 13, 2017

Ask your unit trust advisors the question about whether your investments are on track to achieving your goals, and the answers will get pretty fuzzy pretty fast. You’ll probably hear whether your unit trust fund has out or under-performed the benchmarks. Or what performance it’s in.

At Investley, we're all about getting you to your goals with unit trust investment… because in our view, that’s all that matters to you. So with us, you’ll hear the term “goals-based investing.”

“We're all about getting you to your goals, because that’s what really matters”

The name is pretty clunky, but it means what it says: our objective is to help you reach your goals with tools to monitor your unit trust investment. Period. That’s very different from unit trust selection based on market index outperforming, which is usually being highlighted by unit trust advisors or Unit Trust Management Company (UTMC).

We believe that goals-based investing gives you a much higher chance of reaching your goals.

How does Investley help you in Unit Trust Investment to achieve your goals?

First, we gather information about you and your finances, your age, career, and what you want to accomplish. Then, our tools will analyze unit trust funds past performance and annualized return, underlying asset type and current economic conditions to shortlist those funds that can meet your goals for you. You can then invest with UTMC.

From there, our tools will monitor your unit trust portfolio for each of your goals and rules set by you. And each portfolio can differ from the others, based on the type of goal you want to achieve. For example, a retirement savings portfolio will be very different from a more near-term goal. That’s in part because a longer-term goal enables you to take on greater risk — and offers the opportunity to achieve a higher return — since the time frame is longer. You will get notified when the funds return deviate from your goals and rules are hit.
